The online training is a recording of the training organized in Helsinki on June 6-7, 2024.
The Encouraging Communication and Language online training focuses on developing the communication skills of people with pre-symbolic and emerging symbolic communication levels. The training discusses communication skills and their support, especially from the perspective of autism spectrum disorder and/or intellectual disability.
The online training provides professionals working with clients with early communication levels with both theoretical knowledge and concrete tools for daily work. In the training, you will learn how to assess the communication skills of people with pre-symbolic or emerging symbolic communication levels and set rehabilitation goals, as well as how evidence-based rehabilitation should be implemented in cooperation with the clients’ immediate environments. The online training reviews the application of speech-supporting and replacement communication methods for this client group and presents solutions to challenges related to rehabilitation and environments. The training includes a written guide written by Billy Ogletree.

Expert lecturer: Billy Ogletree
Billy Ogletree is a speech therapist and professor of communication sciences and disorders at Western Carolina University (WCU), who has spent over 30 years researching pre-symbolic and early symbolic communication disorders, as well as augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Billy Ogletree is familiar with the challenges of rehabilitation and the surrounding environment, and he is the author of the book Augmentative and Alternative Communication: Challenges and Solutions (2021). The online training specifically aims to provide solutions to the challenges of early communication.
